About the Artist
Peter Bak Frederiksen's paintings are often dramatic and vibrant, ranging from delicate expressions created with a soft brush to bold, textured surfaces shaped with a palette knife and scratched details. Light plays a central role in his work, often creating a striking contrast between darkness and brightness.
His inspiration frequently comes from nature and abandoned or decaying buildings. Small details may spark the idea for a painting, but the finished works are entirely imaginary. The caves, cliffs and mountain formations depicted in his paintings do not exist in reality. They come into being only when the brush or palette knife touches the canvas and begins to shape the image.
Each painting undergoes repeated changes until something emerges that feels meaningful — not necessarily because it is beautiful or aesthetically pleasing. His paintings are deeply personal, reflecting his state of mind at the time of their creation.
In earlier years, Peter primarily worked with ink drawings, but since 2003, acrylic painting has become his main form of artistic expression.
His work has been exhibited at a number of venues, including Trevisan International Art Exhibition in Italy, Musikhuset Aarhus in Denmark, Galleri Experiment in Silkeborg, and Marziart International Gallery in Hamburg, Germany.

On Peter Bak Frederiksen's Artistic World · Tom Jørgensen, Editor of Kunstavisen
Although one can often recognise a waterfall, a portal, towering cliffs or the meeting of the sea and the horizon in Peter Bak Frederiksen's paintings, he is not primarily a figurative painter. Far more than the physical phenomena of this world, he is fascinated by the most intangible element of all: light. Light is the recurring theme in Peter Bak Frederiksen's paintings. The light that enters the world on the day of creation, bringing order and form out of the darkness of chaos.
At their core, Peter Bak Frederiksen's paintings are therefore optimistic. In his work, light always triumphs in the end, and one can sense the intensity of his artistic creative process.
In his use of colour and composition, Peter Bak Frederiksen has become increasingly daring and confident. The results have steadily improved over the years, and one can now sense that he has become a fully accomplished painter.

Peter Bak’s art is surely strong and intense, with deep suggestions born of the intimate dialogue between the chromatic vibrations and the pictorial gestures that obviously stand out as its main features. Nature, with its elements and landscapes, stirs some fervent passion in this Danish artist, yet it is not transferred onto canvas through representation. Instead, it actually becomes an excuse to develop a type of painting that intentionally dissolves – as the work progresses – the initial inspiration, to give way to chromatic impetus and to the emotion of light exalting every detail of the painted surface.
His pictures, very powerful and refined, always have a strong visual impact: his art does not record images but communicates emotions. The hand following the free creative flow is guided by a mind producing immediate intuitions, impulses, memories, impressions from travels.
This artist, unpredictable in his pictorial creations, shuns all bonds, when composing. He proceeds by balancing dynamic tensions implying a rich spiritual dimension and his great passion for pure abstraction, in which colour is invaded by the intensity of light.
In front of his paintings, the spectator is invited to step onto paths unfolding in his inner world – including his fantasy world – as he feels the growing and irresistible need to discover the thoughts, dreams and feelings shaped by the hand of this artist.
